Robert Coates is a fine artist from Sydney whose work contains a muscular physicality and urgency which he sees reflected in the broader social fabric of Australia. His art playfully challenges notions of orthodoxy, exploring cultural blind spots with cheeky ‘pop’ brazen aesthetic. His mixed media works often occur on found object canvasses.

Robert attended Sydney College of Art, briefly before returning to his self-taught method of journeying through psychological landscapes and communities on the rugged edges of society. His experiential paintings often deal with his feelings about the immense beauty resonating through the land of Australia and its people. More broadly, his work interrogates the interconnected, cyclical nature of life with a raw, celebratory spontaneity.
